What actually happens when you open a window

You open a window. Air comes in. That's the whole thing, right?

Not exactly. There is more to it than you might think. And understanding it might change how you use your windows.

The air inside is not the same as the air outside

When a room is closed up for a while, the air inside changes. It gets warmer. It holds more moisture. It collects dust, cooking smells, and whatever else is in the room.

Opening a window does not just let air in. It lets the stale air out. It replaces the old air with fresh air.

That is why a room feels different after you open a window. Not because it is cooler, but because the air itself is different.

What actually moves

When you open a window, air does not just drift in. It flows. Warm air rises. Cool air falls. When you open a window, you create a path for air to move.

If you open windows on opposite sides of the room, air flows straight through. That is called cross-ventilation. It is the most effective way to cool a room without air conditioning.

If you only open one window, the air moves slower. It still helps, but it takes longer for the room to feel fresh.

How much time does it take?

A few minutes is often enough. You do not need to leave windows open all day to get fresh air. Five to ten minutes can change the air in a room completely.

The best time to do it is early morning or late evening when the outside air is cooler. But any time is better than never.

The hidden benefit

Fresh air does more than make a room feel nice. It reduces moisture, which prevents mould. It removes dust and smells that get trapped inside. It can even help you sleep better at night.

The air inside most homes is more polluted than the air outside. Opening a window is the simplest way to fix that.
