You open a window. You expect wind to come in. But sometimes nothing happens. The air is still. The room stays stuffy.

Wind has a direction

Wind does not blow every way at once. It comes from a direction. If your window is open on the wrong side of the house, the wind will not come in. It will go around or over.

Find out which direction the wind usually comes from in your area. Then open windows on that side.

Two windows are better than one

One open window lets a little air in. Two open windows let air flow through.

When you open windows on opposite sides of the room or house, the air moves in one side and out the other. That is called cross-ventilation. It is the fastest way to cool a room without air conditioning.

If you only have one window, open it and also open a door. The air will move through.

The right window makes a difference

Some windows let in more air than others. Casement windows open wide with nothing in the middle. They catch wind best. Awning windows let air in but less of it. Sliding windows open only half the way.
